Ollantaytambo

The town of Ollantaytambo stands today as one of the most remarkable heritage sites of Inca culture. Strategically placed in the Urubamba Valley, Ollantaytambo is famous for being a main starting point of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The town still contains many structures and ruins dating back to pre-Spanish Conquest times; some of these structures are still inhabited by Ollantaytambo’s residents, who integrate the old stonework frames in their houses.

But it’s not just the more common buildings that show the town’s strong connection to the past. Ollantaytambo features numerous terraces, storehouses, monoliths, and fountains ‒ Inca mementos that have resisted the passage of time. Remnants of funerary towers and defensive walls also dot the surrounding landscape. There is simply no chance you won’t feel yourself travelling back in time once you step into Ollantaytambo!
